GENERAL INFORMATION
Description
A phytophagous weevil that may be used for the biocontrol of thistles
Example pests controlled
Mainly Carduus spp. and Cirsium spp. including nodding (musk) thistle (Carduus nutans) and plumeless thistle (Carduus acanthoides )
Example applications
Pasture; Rangeland; Grassland
Efficacy & activity
-
Appearance and life cycle
Adult weevils are about 10mm long and reddish-brown when young but turn much darker with age. Female lays her eggs on the thistle plant. The hatched larvae feed mainly at the growing tip of the plant, stunting its growth and significantly reducing seed production.
