Collagen protein hydrolysate is commercially produced through a multi-step process that begins with animal by-products rich in collagen, such as bovine hides, bones, or fish skins. These raw materials are first cleaned, degreased, and crushed to increase surface area. The next step involves demineralisation, typically using acid treatments to remove calcium and other minerals, resulting in a soft matrix called ossein. This is followed by extraction, where collagen is separated using hot water or mild acid. The extracted collagen is then subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis, where specific proteases break down the protein into smaller peptides, reducing its molecular weight and enhancing solubility and bioavailability. The hydrolysate is then purified through filtration and ion exchange, sterilized, and finally dried into a fine powder. |
