A slender, black-bodied wasp approximately 2–3 mm long with long, filiform antennae and translucent wings. Its life cycle is a rapid 10- to 15-day process (at 25 DegC) that begins when a female injects a single egg into a host aphid. The resulting larva consumes the host from within, eventually causing the aphid to die and harden into a papery, tan or golden-brown "mummy." After pupating inside this shell, the adult wasp matures and emerges through a circular exit hole to mate and continue the cycle, with a single female capable of parasitising hundreds of aphids during her brief adult life. |
