Apomorphine hydrochloride is commercially produced through a chemical transformation of morphine, its natural precursor. The process begins with the acid-catalysed rearrangement of morphine, typically using phosphoric acid at elevated temperatures around 120 DegC, which induces dehydration and structural rearrangement to form the aporphine skeleton. In some methods, morphine is first converted to beta-chloromorphine, which is then further transformed into dichlorodihydrodesoxymorphine before undergoing dehydration to yield apomorphine. Once the apomorphine base is formed, it is reacted with hydrochloric acid to produce the hydrochloride salt. | |||
