The production of lokivetmab involves a sophisticated biotechnological process centred around genetic engineering and cell culture. It begins with the insertion of DNA sequences encoding the canine-specific antibody into mammalian host cells, typically Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells, which are optimised for high-yield protein expression. These cells are cultured in large-scale bioreactors under sterile, nutrient-rich conditions to produce the antibody. After sufficient growth, the culture medium is harvested and the antibody is purified using affinity chromatography, often with protein A columns, followed by additional steps like ion-exchange and size-exclusion chromatography to ensure purity and structural integrity. | |||
|
As a rough estimate, the GHG emissions per gram of lokivetmab could conservatively range from 100 to 300 kg CO₂e, depending on the energy mix, production scale, and waste management practices. |
