The biopesticidal activity is largely attributed to its characteristic sulphur-containing volatile compounds, released enzymatically from precursors like S-alk(en)yl cysteine sulfoxides upon tissue disruption. Organosulphur volatiles are dominant in essential oils and extracts, and include dipropyl disulfide, dipropyl trisulfide, methyl propyl trisulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, dimethyl disulfide, methyl allyl trisulfide, propyl 1-propenyl disulfide and related sulphides/disulphides/trisulphides (often comprising the majority, e.g., 50–80%+ of volatiles), alongside minor non-sulphur components such as aldehydes (e.g. 2-methyl-2-pentenal), ketones (e.g. trideca-2-one), furanones, d-limonene, and trace terpenoids. Non-volatile fractions contain supporting bioactive compounds like flavonoids (e.g. quercetin, kaempferol, rutin, isoquercitrin), phenolic acids (e.g. ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid), sterols (e.g. beta-sitosterol), saponins and allicin-like thiosulfinates. Composition varies by plant part (e.g., higher sulphur volatiles in pseudostems/roots), cultivar, extraction method and geographic origin, but organosulphur volatiles remain the primary drivers of its biopesticidal efficacy. |
