Citronella oil is primarily produced from the leaves and stems of lemongrass species, specifically Cymbopogon nardus (Ceylon citronella) and Cymbopogon winterianus (Java citronella). The Lemongrass is cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. The plants are harvested and undergoes steam distillation, where steam is passed through the plant material. The heat causes the essential oils to evaporate, and the steam carries the oil vapours into a cooling system. The steam and oil vapours are condensed back into liquid form. The mixture of water and oil is then separated, typically using a separator, where the oil floats on top and is collected. | |||
|
Data for specific plant oils is scarce. However, from publicly available data the carbon footprint of plant oils has been estimated at between 1.0 and 4.0 kg CO₂e per kg of oil. This depends on the plant oil content, agricultural practices and processing methods used. |
